Federal Investment Tax Credit
If you're thinking about buying solar panels, a Solar Roof, or a backup battery system, you might be in for a nice surprise with federal income tax credits! Just keep in mind that these credits are set to run out after December 31, 2025. Starting in 2023, backup battery systems—whether they're paired with solar or stand-alone—are now part of the Investment Tax Credit. To get advice that's specific to your situation, it's a good idea to chat with a qualified tax advisor.
30% federal solar and battery tax credits may be ending on December 31, 2025.

SGIP Budget
SGIP funding is distributed among developers, with a cap of 20% of the total budget per step.
Important: Once 50% of a step’s budget has been assigned by the program administrator, the remaining funds are set aside specifically for residential customers who have experienced two or more separate Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events or who reside in designated High Fire Threat Districts (HFTD)—currently enforced. You can check whether your home is located in an HFTD.
SGIP Application Process
  1. Once your order for a backup battery system is confirmed, your Certified Installer will begin the SGIP application process by submitting the initial paperwork to reserve available funds. Funding depends on the current step and the number of active applications.
  2. Your Certified Installer will handle the installation, system commissioning, and coordinate utility approval for your backup battery system.
  3. After installation, they will submit the final SGIP documentation. An SGIP program administrator will conduct a system inspection to ensure proper operation.
  4. You’ll receive your rebate once the final application is approved.
SGIP Prioritization
Unfortunately, participation in the SGIP rebate program is not guaranteed. Due to high demand, we prioritize applications based on the date the backup battery system was purchased.
SGIP Program Requirements
The SGIP program is designed to ease the pressure on our electrical grid while also helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If you want to take part, your backup battery system needs to play an active role in this effort. This means it has to meet a certain usage requirement— specifically, it should complete at least 52 full charge and discharge cycles each year, which adds up to a minimum of 687 kWh.
Annual Usage Requirement
To fulfill the annual cycling requirement, make sure your backup battery system is operating in either Self-Powered or Time-Based Control mode.
These modes allow your system to charge and discharge on a daily basis, helping you meet SGIP guidelines. You can still set a backup reserve to keep some energy stored for emergencies—we recommend keeping this reserve at or below 30%.
If severe weather is approaching, you can switch to Backup-Only mode, which dedicates 100% of your battery’s capacity for backup use. Once conditions return to normal, be sure to switch back to Self-Powered or Time-Based Control to resume regular cycling.
Powerwall for Backup and SGIP
The SGIP program does not allow backup battery systems to be used exclusively for emergency backup. To qualify, your system must regularly cycle—charging and discharging—to supply part of your home’s daily energy needs.
While you can set a backup reserve or temporarily switch to Backup-Only mode during extreme weather or outages, your system should normally operate in Self-Powered or Time-Based Control mode to remain compliant with SGIP requirements. Preguntar a ChatGPT
SGIP and Federal Investment Tax Credit
You may qualify for both the California SGIP incentive and the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) when you install a backup battery system, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria for each program.
