The math teacher who built a solar car from scratch

‘I could have been India’s Elon Musk’: Meet the Indian maths teacher who built his solar-powered car.
An Indian man has gone viral for his creation of a solar-powered car, a solo project 11 years in the making.
Bilal Ahmed, a maths teacher from Srinagar in Kashmir, made it his aim to build a ‘luxurious’ and sustainable vehicle that is not just for the super-wealthy.

Soaring fuel prices in the northern region made the invention even more timely. While Tesla’s continued absence in India means the solar panel-adorned design soon caught the imagination of car enthusiasts.

“Cars like Mercedes, Ferrari, BMW are just a dream for a common person. Only a few people can afford it while it remains a dream for others to drive such cars and roam in [them],” he told the Rising Kashmir newspaper.

“I thought of something to give a luxurious feel to the people.”

The car has a dual system, which means it first utilizes energy from the batteries. And while the car is running, it automatically gets charged from solar panels.

Ahmad has currently used makeshift batteries that are not as efficient. On charging it for two-three hours, the car can travel about 40-50km.

For Ahmad, making a solar car was not enough. He wanted his car to stand out from the crowd “There are many other electric solar cars in the market, for example, Nissan Leaf or Lightyear One. So, I wanted YMC to have a unique design. I thought of making it fully automatic with gull-wing doors,” he says

The car’s design, inspired by the American company DMC DeLorean, flaunts gull-wing doors that open upwards. “This car already had an automatic transmission with two doors.

So, I thought of changing these two doors into gull-wing doors, which are usually available only in luxury cars like Mercedes 300 SL or DeLorean,” says Ahmad.
